Subcontract Business (SCB)

The subcontract business provides a piece work wage to individuals receiving training or providing work in the following areas:

  • Mail preparation
  • Light assembly and packing
  • Postal meter operation
  • Heat sealing
  • Material handling
  • Can and bottle recycling

Individual program plans are developed for each worker and progress toward goals is assessed on a quarterly basis.  Referrals to other Hockanum Industries’ programs or other agencies are made when appropriate. 

Supported Employment (SE)

Developmentally disabled individuals are provided with opportunities to work in integrated community-based settings either individually or as a crew member.  Supported Employment provides hourly employment and training through:

  • Training in job specific skills and accessing public transportation
  • Janitorial services
  • Housekeeping services
  • Hanger recycling
  • Confidential paper shredding
  • Placement in local retail businesses and food service/restaurant work
  • Support and follow-along services
  • Job coaching

Individual programs and programs are developed and assessed on a quarterly basis.  Individual placements will work under the direction of a job coach until the need is phased out and the community employer takes on full supervision of the worker.

Opportunities for Older Adults (OOA)

OOA provides fulfilling retirement experiences through:

  • Onsite leisure activities
  • Scheduled trips
  • Local outings
  • Integration into community senior citizen activities

OOA activities focus on assisting retired and semi-retired individuals with developmental disabilities to participate in leisure activities of their choosing in a structured setting that empowers their participation.

Respite and Recreation (R&R)

R&R provides developmentally disabled individuals with social activities in a leisure setting, basic life skills, and recreational opportunities with peers and the community at large.  The respite program operates during after-work hours during the week and occasional weekend hours.  The program enables families of developmentally disabled individuals and community training home providers to take a break from their care giving activities knowing that their family member or client is being well supervised.  R&R provides quality leisure services through:

  • Onsite arts, crafts, and games
  • Field trips to various events/attractions
  • Social interaction opportunities
  • Learning basic life skills

Hockanum Retail Businesses

HOCKANUM GREENHOUSE

The Greenhouse, located in Mansfield Depot, provides paid training and work experience in a horticultural retail setting for developmentally disabled adults in the following areas:

  • Planting annual and perennial flowers
  • Transplanting
  • Watering
  • Wreath and dry flower wiring
  • Gardening
  • Grounds keeping
  • Interaction with the public

The Hockanum Greenhouse works toward achieving its objectives through:

  • Development of seasonal planting strategies and horticultural activities
  • Task analysis of specific greenhouse skills
  • Training of individuals in necessary skills
  • Assessment of individual progress completed through data collection and staff observation.

SHRED & GONE

Shred & Gone offers confidential shredding services for your varied needs.  A crew of developmentally disabled adults, trained and supervised by Tammy Coutu, provide the following:

  • One-time purges/monthly purges
  • Weekly destruction as needed
  • Scheduled pick-up/drop-off services
  • Cross-cut and straight cut shredders
  • Reasonable rates by the pound
